May is a meaningful time for us at Rising Hope Therapy, as we proudly recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. This month offers an important opportunity to shine a light on the significance of mental health and its impact on our communities.
Mental health affects 1 in 5 individuals in the U.S. and remains the leading cause of disability worldwide. These individuals are not strangers—they are our friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors. As a society, we thrive when we remember the strength of community and the importance of showing up for one another.
Mental health isn't only about navigating moments of crisis. It’s also about recognizing when we need to pause, reset, and use the tools that help us stay grounded. Whether or not you are directly impacted by a mental health condition, building your own emotional toolbox is essential.
Below are 8 tools we recommend keeping close:
Your Mental Health Toolbox
1. Breathing Exercises & Mindfulness TechniquesQuick techniques like box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) or guided apps like Calm or Headspace can help calm your nervous system and bring clarity when you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

2. Journaling Journaling allows you to express your thoughts, track emotional patterns, or simply unload mental clutter. Struggling to get started? Try using AI tools like ChatGPT for prompts:
“Help me explore how I’m feeling today.”
“I want to journal about self-compassion.”
“Can you guide me through journaling a tough decision?”
“I'd like to reflect on my growth—where do I begin?”
3. Go-To Support Contact Keep one or two trusted contacts you can reach out to when you need connection or support. Knowing someone is there can make all the difference.
4. Movement Breaks Stretch, walk, dance—any kind of movement can reduce stress and elevate your mood. It doesn’t have to be a workout; even a few minutes can help.

5. Feel-Good Playlist Music has the power to instantly shift your mood. Build a playlist with songs that uplift or soothe you. Not sure where to start? Check out curated playlists like those from Self Care Is For Everyone on Spotify.
Beyond May: Keep the Conversation Going
Mental health awareness doesn't stop at the end of May. Let’s commit to creating a culture where mental well-being is prioritized every day—for ourselves and those around us.

Here are a few ways to continue supporting mental health:
Talk About It. Sharing your story—or simply being honest about how you’re feeling—can help reduce stigma and encourage others to open up.
Educate Yourself. Learning about mental health conditions and their signs helps you become a more informed and compassionate ally.
Reach Out. Check in with friends and family. A simple, “How you doing?” or “I am here for you.” can make a huge impact.

Practice Self-Care. Emotional well-being is built through daily habits. Prioritize sleep, nutrition, movement, and rest.
Seek Professional Help. Therapy, counseling, and support groups are valuable resources on the path to healing and growth.
At Rising Hope Therapy, we’re here to walk alongside you—this month and always. Let’s continue creating a world where mental health is honored, supported, and celebrated.
